Traditional style PVCu windows refresh a Woodbridge home

A new solution for failing original windows
Mr & Mrs Leeman have enjoyed life in their Woodbridge home since moving in shortly after it was built in 2002. Over the years, they had carefully maintained and improved the house, creating a home that perfectly suited their family and lifestyle.
While they remained as fond of the property as ever, the original windows had never quite lived up to expectations. As time passed, they became increasingly difficult to operate and maintain. The couple felt their quality no longer reflected the standard of the home itself. When the time came to consider replacements, there was an important challenge to overcome.
A covenant on the development required the front elevation of the property to retain its original character. Any replacement windows would therefore need to be sympathetic to the appearance of the original sash windows and remain in keeping with the surrounding properties.
Having previously worked with The Burgess Group on their conservatory, Mr & Mrs Leeman were already familiar with our work. They felt confident asking us to help find a solution that met the development’s requirements while delivering the quality they wanted.

A familiar look, with a new approach
For the couple, maintaining the appearance of their home was just as important as improving its performance. They wanted a solution that respected the original design while offering greater reliability, improved security, enhanced energy efficiency and minimal maintenance.
Their search led them to explore our Bygone and Evolution PVCu window ranges. Combining authentic period detailing with modern engineering, the ranges offered exactly the balance they had been hoping to achieve.

Authentic detailing, thoughtfully recreated
The appearance of timber windows, combined with the benefits of low-maintenance PVCu construction, made our timber alternative windows an especially appealing choice for Mr & Mrs Leeman.
They were particularly impressed by the wood-effect construction at the frame joints. Designed to recreate the appearance of traditional timber butt joints, this detail adds to the authentic look of the finished windows and helps them sit naturally within their home.
The traditional styling of our PVCu windows also satisfied the requirements of the covenant, while the modern design offered the comfort, performance and ease of operation the that had been missing from the originals. Mr & Mrs Leeman were also delighted to discover that many of their neighbours had chosen the same solution, making it a natural fit for the development and helping to preserve the carefully considered character of the street for years to come.

Traditional detailing for the front façade
The Bygone Symphony sash windows the couple chose for the front elevation closely reflect the proportions and detailing of their original timber windows.
Slim meeting rails, timber-look joints and carefully selected hardware help recreate the look they wanted to retain. These details were particularly important in maintaining the familiar style of the front of the home.
The couple chose Farrow & Ball White Tie for a softer finish than a standard brilliant white PVCu. Antique brass Acorn locks and limit stops complete the windows, adding a warm, understated contrast to the light frames.

Completing the look with casement windows
To complement the style of the new sash windows at the front of the home, the couple chose Evolution PVCu stormproof casement windows for the rest of the property.
The lipped casement design and cream wood-textured foil finish work particularly well alongside the property’s existing materials and conservatory, helping to create a consistent appearance across the different elevations.
The windows also feature energy-efficient glazing, easy-clean hinges and concealed ventilation, bringing practical benefits to the home while retaining the look the couple wanted.

Could PVCu be right for your home?
For Mr and Mrs Leeman, choosing PVCu meant they could preserve the traditional appearance they loved while giving their home a reliable, practical update. From sash windows on the front elevation to complementary casements at the rear, the finished scheme brings together the style of the original windows with the benefits of modern materials.
If you are looking for new windows for your home, our PVCu ranges offer a wide choice of traditional styles, finishes and detailing to suit your property.
