Timber Alternative Windows Preserve the Character of a Woodbridge Home

Returning to The Burgess Group for new timber style windows

Mr and Mrs Leeman have owned their attractive home just outside Woodbridge in Suffolk since it was built in 2002. After many years of maintaining, treating and repairing the original timber windows, the time had come to replace them.

The couple were looking for heritage-style windows that would complement the architecture of the house whilst offering improved energy efficiency, easier maintenance and greater long-term durability whilst retaining the traditional appearance of the property.

Already familiar with The Burgess Group and having built a long-standing relationship with owner Edward, Mr and Mrs Leeman naturally returned to us when the time came to replace their windows.

Having completed a number of similar projects at neighbouring properties, the brief was clear. The new windows needed to preserve the established character of the house rather than make it look newly altered or overly modern.

Choosing classic windows for a Suffolk home

To retain the appearance of the original windows, Mr and Mrs Leeman selected traditional sash windows for the front elevation and traditional casement windows for the sides and rear.

Maintaining the proportions and detailing of the original sash windows was particularly important. At the rear, the casement windows needed to complement the existing conservatory and provide a consistent appearance across the property.

Keen to replicate the timeless character of the original timber windows while benefiting from a near-maintenance free solution, the couple chose our timber alternative range.

Traditional Appearance with Modern Performance

The main challenge on this project was to improve performance without changing the established character of the home.

Both luxurious timber alternative window brands, offered better insulation, improved weather resistance and greater security than the ageing originals. At the same time, the sash and casement designs retain the proportions and visual details that suit the property. One of the details the couple particularly liked with the timber alternative windows was the wood-effect construction at the frame joints, designed to resemble traditional timber butt joints.

Bygone Symphony sash windows

Wanting to keep the style of the current irreparable windows, Mr and Mrs Leeman chose sash style windows for the front of their property and casement windows at the sides and rear.

The Bygone range is designed to recreate the proportions and detailing associated with traditional timber sash windows. Slim meeting rails, authentic timber-look joints and carefully selected hardware help the windows sit comfortably within period-style and traditionally designed properties.

Finished in Farrow & Ball White Tie, the new sash windows provide a softer and more traditional appearance than a standard brilliant white PVCu finish. The antique brass Acorn locks and limit stops complete the design and reinforce the heritage character of the front elevation.

Evolution storm casement windows

At the sides and rear of the house, Evolution lipped casements were selected to match the style of the existing windows and complement the large conservatory.

For this project, the wood-textured foil finish, flush detailing and traditional proportions make them particularly suitable to achieve heritage look windows with minimal maintenance requirements. The Cream Wood finish works well with the property’s existing materials and provides a consistent appearance across the rear and side elevations.

The windows also incorporate energy-efficient glazing, easy-clean hinges and concealed ventilation, helping improve comfort and everyday practicality without detracting from the traditional design.
