Keeping the heat in with new windows and doors
Dawn wanted to restore her cottages charming aesthetic, whilst keeping the road noise out and the heat in.
“It needed re-decorating throughout. The windows were more filler than wood in places, sealed shut by years of painting. They were single glazed, draughty and dripping with condensation every morning. Being on a street with no front garden, the noise levels were high too.
The house was so cold during my first winter. I needed to make the cottage warmer, lower my energy bills, increase security and improve the look of the house.”
With that in mind, Dawn decided against having her windows repaired and re-painted, feeling it would only solve part of the problem. Instead she opted for a more complete and longer-term solution.
Following a recommendation from her decorator, Dawn popped into our Notcutts showroom, a stone’s throw from her house.
“The showroom made me feel relaxed. The windows and doors looked amazing. I had a very friendly and warm welcome and plenty of time to look at the products. I didn’t feel pressured at all.
I’m a visual person, so seeing and touching the windows was really helpful. I was undecided on timber or a timber alternative. Having someone to demonstrate and talk through my options was a great help, along with the brochures I took to go through at home.”
Keen to use a local company, Dawn explored her options, first online and then in person.
“The professionalism of the Burgess Group team, from the very first visit, made them come out on top. Other companies were cheaper; but their windows were bulky, and the options limited. They just didn’t look as good. I wanted high quality and easy maintenance with good guarantees. The Burgess Group were able to offer that.”
Originally replacing four sash windows at the front of the house, Dawn was so impressed she bought windows for the back of the house, a front door and a stable door too.
“I knew in my heart if I’d chosen something I didn’t love, I’d have to look at it every day and I’d regret it.
The windows and doors have made my house warmer and more comfortable. The noise levels have reduced dramatically too. I no longer hear conversations from people walking past, which used to be a real problem for my dog.
My stable door is amazing in the summer. I leave the top of the door open for fresh air and for the cats to come in and out, but the lower half can stay shut to keep the dog in.
I’m now so proud of my little cottage, it may be small, but it looks great, with the most beautiful windows & doors.”

Advice
To other homeowners considering changing their windows or doors, Dawn has the following advice.
“If you can, visit the showroom, come and take a look in person, you really need to see the products to appreciate the style and quality. Make an enquiry – the team have so much knowledge and are very helpful in suggesting options you may not have thought of.
Try not to choose a company on price alone, look at the design options, not just the style but the furniture, glass options, colours and guarantees too. Some of the companies I looked at, were cheaper, but the quality and range was not extensive.
I would definitely recommend the Burgess Group and my windows and doors. The only thing left for me to replace is my French doors, so one day I’ll return for those too.
