Traditional sash windows & front door breathe life into Norwich Victorian city centre home

Mr and Mr Groves have owned their traditional Victorian bay semi close to Norwich city centre for over 20 years. Despite having the sashes previously renovated, the couple spent a number of winters sitting in the North-facing front room under blankets.
The Brief
Not only keen to keep the draughts out, the couple also wanted to future proof their home so started looking around Norfolk and Suffolk for a window and door supplier, getting brochures and comparing prices. They came across The Burgess Group and were pleased to see that they don’t offer off the peg windows, all orders are tailor-made, a feature that was important to them. They considered three other suppliers, all with good reviews, but it was the bespoke products offered by The Burgess Group that won them over.
Mr and Mrs Groves visited the Fornham showroom, were able to open and close the windows, and to see the weight and level of security that the front doors offer.
We were just knocked out, it’s as much about engineering as it is woodwork.
Slim sash windows
The property’s windows are an unusual shape – traditional sashes would have been too big for the window space so surveyor James suggested that slimmer, hidden spring sashes would allow more light into the rooms. The couple went with James’ recommendation and have been really pleased with them.
They praised the installations team who went far beyond what they expected; the bay window was a challenge due to its uneven shape having sunk and been underpinned in the past. The team constructed a timber bay for the main window, gaining high praise from the Groves for their joinery and craftsmanship.

Timber doors and surrounds
The Westonbirt front door is finished in blue, as are the French doors that lead to a sunny patio area at the rear of the property. A graphic designer by trade, Mr Groves designed the font for the toplight at the front door himself; a stunning, and useful, detail.
A few months after installation the couple noticed a brown mark under the bay window. Contacting The Burgess Group, the original fitter revisited and ascertained that the problem was with the structure of the bay – a crack in the top corner of the stonework was letting in water, an easy fix once the fitter traced where the water was coming from.
So impressed by the service and attention to detail, Mr and Mrs Groves brought forward future plans and had their kitchen and back bedroom windows done soon after.
The windows and doors have changed the way the couple view and enjoy their home.
