A beautiful new timber front door for a 1930s home

Combining traditional character with a modern design

Mr & Mrs Smith started renovating their 1930s home in 2012 and after major alterations the time came for a new front door. Although the original door had its own character, it had become tired and no longer offered the energy efficiency and security expected from a modern entrance door. The couple also felt that, as the first feature visitors see when approaching the house, the entrance needed to make more of a statement.

Having seen one of our doors installed for a family member, they contacted The Burgess Group to discuss creating a new timber front door that would complement both the exterior and interior of their home.

We were introduced to Burgess Group by my sister-in-law after having a Burgess door fitted which looked fantastic, so we reached out and started the project.

A new approach to enhance the existing entrance

When choosing the design, Mr & Mrs Smith wanted a new interpretation of their original oak front door rather than something that felt completely different from the property.

It was important to us to match not only the character of the house but to compliment both the outside and inside of the property. Outside to match the existing oak and internally, the change of colour and design of the oak panelling.

The couple chose our Polestead style door in a dark oak stain finish to create a strong yet understated entrance. Designed with a larger proportion of glazing and fewer astragal bars, it brings more light into the house whilst being sympathetic to the original. To complete the look, they selected aged bronze ironmongery, including a Brompton handle on a beehive rose and Art Deco door knob.

The Burgess Group managed to make a frame to sit inside the existing frame and match its colour perfectly.

“Exceptional from start to finish”

From their initial enquiry through to installation, Mr & Mrs Smith felt their experience with The Burgess Group far exceeded their expectations. The finished entrance combines everything they wanted from a new door, from the traditional detailing to the improved performance and security.

The increased light has really opened up the entrance hall of the house and now our dog enjoys sunbathing there.

Explore the difference for yourself

For Mr & Mrs Smith, seeing a Burgess door at a family member’s home helped them decide to start their own project. Being able to see the quality and finish in person gave them a valuable insight into what they could expect from their own new front door.
