Replacement timber windows transform chilly Cambridgeshire cottage

Keeping the heat in

Making their home warm and welcoming was a priority for Mr and Mrs Wheeler when choosing replacement timber casement windows for their Cambridgeshire cottage.

Their listed country home, which dates back to the 1700s, was in desperate need of updating, the draughty windows being the main issue.

Some of the windows were believed to be the originals, with thin picture glass, all having had numerous repairs and the addition of secondary glazing, however it had come to the point where there was nothing further that could be done to maintain these.

Mr and Mrs Wheeler wanted to keep the original cottage-style design but to also enjoy the benefits that modern windows bring. Heat retention was key and they were desperate to be able to open their windows freely – something they were previously unable to do due to many of them being painted shut.

Showroom experience

It was good to be able to visit a showroom, and to have a pressure-free overview of the available options. The quotes included a few options to consider, the information was all patiently provided, and the home visits were extremely helpful.

The team at The Burgess Group in Fornham near Bury St Edmunds ran through the permissions process Mr and Mrs Wheeler would have to follow, with their property being listed. Replacing windows and doors in a listed property can be a lengthy process and gaining the correct permissions may be challenging so the couple were advised on what steps to take to ensure that they could replicate the original window designs as closely as possible to preserve the buildings character.

Cottage casement windows

In order to remain sympathetic to the existing property, the couple chose Timber Windows’ cottage casement design in ‘off-white’ with 22mm true bars and 14mm ultra slim double glazing, with each pane authentically putty glazed.

The Wheelers chose Monkeytail handles in black for the bedroom windows and Newbury aged brass handles in their downstairs rooms.

The putty glazed windows sit very well with the exterior of an old property, and it is a delight not to have the secondary glazing. The standard of the paint finish looks almost miraculous compared with what was there before; a huge improvement.
