Improving an old rectory for modern family life
Set alongside a church, with views towards a cathedral, this beautiful former rectory in Cambridgeshire is rich in traditional character. When Mr & Mrs Waterson moved in with their young family, they wanted to preserve its original features. However, the ageing windows caused considerable draughts and heat loss.
It was immediately obvious that we needed new windows; we hung ridiculously thick curtains to keep the draughts out but they were rotten and even had insects nesting in them…this became the first job in the house as a result.
Having already invested in an eco-heating system, the family wanted to improve the home’s energy efficiency and create a more comfortable living environment. Our engineered timber windows offered a solution, combining enhanced thermal performance with traditional styling. Their design replicated the original windows, helping to maintain the character of this distinctive period property.
Engineered timber windows for lasting comfort and performance
Designed to complement period properties, much like the rectory with it’s traditional character, our engineered timber windows also offer excellent energy efficiency. High-performance double glazing helps to minimise heat loss, while warm-edge spacer bars provide additional insulation around the edges of the glass.
Having experienced the problems caused by the deterioration of the original windows, long-term durability was an important consideration. Our engineered timber windows come with a 12-year paint guarantee and a 30-year warranty against rot and fungal infection. This offers added reassurance that the family can enjoy the traditional appearance of their new windows for years to come.
Elegant timber flush casement windows
The choice of windows was particularly important in maintaining the traditional character of this beautiful rectory. The family selected timber flush casement windows, with some reaching an impressive 2.6 metres in height. Finished in Porcelain externally and off-white internally, they complement the property while keeping the overall look light and understated.
Particular attention was also given to the glazing bars. The slim 18mm astragal bars were a key consideration for the family, who wanted detailing that felt in keeping with the original window design.
The glazing bars on our new windows are particularly elegant, and this was something we really noticed when researching window suppliers, as products from other companies just seemed to have bars that were too chunky to suit the design.
A softer shade for a welcoming entrance
To match the new windows, the family chose a Bardwell timber entrance door in Porcelain. Rather than opting for traditional white, they embraced a softer shade that works beautifully with the architecture of their home.
The door’s traditional detailing brings character to the entrance, with ovolo moulding and a raised and fielded panel. Above, a sandblasted fanlight incorporates the house name, adding a personal touch that makes the entrance distinctly their own. Chrome door furniture completes the design, bringing a clean, classic finish.
We decided to be brave with the colour choice, choosing Porcelain over the traditional white, as we’d seen other houses using soft greys like this and we’d been impressed with the effect. We’re really happy we made this choice, the finish is one of softness and they match really well with the tone of the brickwork.
