An introduction to the cottage casement
See how choosing the cottage casement design can really maximise the glass and minimise the frame as Edward introduces you to one of our many beautiful showroom designs.
Crafted with slow-grown, knot-free timber, our carefully considered designs offer an appearance that can only be achieved with genuine timber. Effortless to open and beautifully smooth to the touch, our windows won’t twist or warp and are literally guaranteed to stand the test of time.
As the approved Timber Windows partner for East Anglia, we supply and install the complete timberwindows.com range: windows made by one of the country’s most respected timber window manufacturers, to a specification you will not find in off the shelf joinery.
Each casement is crafted from slow grown, knot free engineered timber, chosen because dense, close grained wood is far more stable than faster grown alternatives. The result is a window that opens smoothly, feels substantial in the hand, and holds its shape through the seasons rather than twisting or warping. It is an appearance, and a feel, that only genuine timber delivers.

The window sash sits completely flat with the frame giving a sleek, timeless look suited to pre 1930’s or more contemporary designs. Internal weather strips seamlessly prevent water ingress.

Also referred to as lipped casements, the window sash sits proud, overlapping the frame. Popularised in the 1950’s for protection from driving rain.

Decorative sections are added to the outer front face to give the appearance that the window sashes are recessed into the frame, creating a geometric shadow line characteristic of 1930’s Art Deco design.
The objection to timber has always been maintenance, and modern engineering has largely answered it. These windows are built from engineered timber, laminated in layers so the section stays straight and stable in a way solid wood cannot, then finished in a factory applied microporous paint that lets the timber breathe rather than trapping moisture beneath a sealed film. That is the mechanism behind most of the flaking and rot that gave older painted windows their reputation.
In practice that means years between any attention, and when the time comes to refresh a colour there is no stripping back: a light sand and a fresh coat of microporous paint is all it takes.
Every window is double glazed as standard for warmth and quiet, draught sealed against the weather, and fitted with multi point locking for security. Backed by the Timber Windows guarantee, the paint finish is covered for 12years and the timber against rot and fungal attack for 30years, with the sealed units, hardware and workmanship for 10years. As approved installers, we survey and fit every window ourselves, so the product and the installation are covered by people who answer the phone locally.
The versatility of timber means we can achieve beautifully detailed designs that are just not possible with other materials.
From arched windows, shaped frames and gothic style decorative glazing bars, to artisan etched, patterned or even stained glass to your own design, we’ll work with you or your architect to create something truly unique.

A beautiful way to minimise your window frame and maximise the view of your garden is to choose a cottage casement window design.
Perfectly proportioned for smaller windows (though also performing extremely well for wider openings with the addition of a third window sash), these windows are designed to take away the section of frame that would normally sit between the two opening sashes – the mullion.
When closed, it appears that the central section is there, when it is actually attached to one of the window sashes, opening with it as you can see in the image.
The second sash is opened by activating a small lever on the side of the frame accessed only when the first sash is open, and the window remains just as secure and thermally efficient when closed as our other high performance windows.
