The old objection to timber was maintenance, and modern engineering has largely answered it. Our doors are finished in a factory applied microporous paint that lets the timber breathe rather than sealing moisture beneath the surface, which is the cause of most of the flaking and rot that gave older painted doors their name. In practice it means years between any real attention, and when the time comes to refresh the colour there is no stripping back, just a light sand and a fresh coat.
