Our versatile stable doors
Here Edward demonstrates the easy operation and almost endless design possibilities of our engineered timber stable doors from our showroom in Notcutss Garden Centre in Woodbridge.
Timber stable doors are a charming way to add flexibility to your home. With a choice of proportions, we can design your door to effortlessly fit in with your lifestyle. Loved by cats, especially when dogs are contained inside (or out!) they're perfect for sunny days and gentle breezes, especially where there are no opening windows.
A stable door gives you something an ordinary door cannot: the top half open to the garden, the breeze and the light, while the bottom stays firmly shut and locked. It is the ideal answer for a kitchen or garden room with no opening windows nearby, and a quiet pleasure on a warm day, letting the air in while keeping children, dogs, and the weather exactly where you want them. Cats, it must be said, approve of the arrangement entirely.
As the approved Timber Windows partner for East Anglia, our stable doors are built to the same standard as the complete timberwindows.com range. At the heart of each one is the same robust, precision engineered construction and advanced multi point locking that we offer with our front doors. In fact, most of our front door designs can be adapted into a stable door, so you simply choose the style you like, decide on the proportions, perhaps a 50/50 split or a taller bottom section to lean on while you take in the view, and we design the door around you.
Whether you’re looking for a cottage style, featuring a small glazed window and traditional paneling, or for your stable door to perform as both a door and window, locking open on warmer days and filling the room with air and light, we can create a design that feels entirely your own.
Every detail matters, from the choice of mouldings and door furniture to the finishing colour. Have a colour in mind? Alongside a stunning collection of standard finishes, we can colour match to any Farrow & Ball, Little Green or RAL colour. We can even fit a cat flap for you.
Our stable doors are designed with a lock on both sections. The lock on the bottom section securely connects into the section above or the frame, depending on the position of the key or thumbturn. So you can open the top section whilst the bottom remains securely fixed in place. With a quick turn of the key, fix both sections together and operate the door in the traditional way. When it’s time to lock up, bottom and top sections are effortlessly turned to lock into the frame and engage the multipoint locking down the door. Take a look at the video further down this page to see our stable door in action.

The old worry with timber was the upkeep, and a stable door takes more weather and more handling than most, so it is a fair thing to ask. Modern engineering has largely settled it. Our stable doors are built from engineered timber, laminated in layers so the door stays straight and true where solid wood might move, then finished in a microporous paint that lets the timber breathe rather than sealing moisture in. That is the cause of most of the flaking and rot that gave older painted doors their reputation.
In practice it means years between any real attention, and when the time comes to refresh the colour there is no stripping back, just a light sand and a fresh coat. Behind that sits the Timber Windows guarantee: 30 years against rot and fungal attack, 12 years on the paint finish, and 10 years each on the hardware and our workmanship.
Closed and locked, a stable door is every bit as secure as a single solid door: both sections engage the multipoint locking into the frame, so the point people assume is a weakness is nothing of the sort.
The same is true of the weather. Where the two halves meet, [a weather seal and rebated meeting rail — confirm exact Timber Windows detailing] close the join so that, shut up against a wet East Anglian wind, the door performs as one continuous, draught sealed unit. Open it up on a warm day for the air and the view; close it down in winter and you would never know it split in two.
