Bifold Doors. The Complete Homeowner Guide
A beautifully designed bifold door does more than open a space. It changes how your home feels. With the right product and configuration, your new bifold doors allow you to enjoy views of your garden or patio even when closed. When open, a well-proportioned, slimline bifold creates a natural and effortless connection between inside and out.
At Burgess Group, we specialise in premium bifold doors selected for their design integrity, performance and longevity. With a long-standing local reputation built on detail and craftsmanship, we work across Suffolk, Ipswich, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and the surrounding areas, helping homeowners create light-filled, beautifully finished living spaces.
What Are Bifold Doors?
A bifold door is made up of multiple precision-engineered panels that glide smoothly along a track and fold neatly to one or both sides of the opening. Every bifold door is made to measure and designed around how you want to live in your home.

Configuration options include:
- Traffic doors for everyday access
- Low or flush thresholds
- Solar control or privacy glazing
- Enhanced security glass
- Shading and blind systems
- Matching single or double doors elsewhere in the home
Our experience with bifold doors over many years means we now only offer doors with the best in:
- Engineering integrity
- Visual refinement
- Long-term reliability.
- The slimmest possible sightlines
- Technically capable where others aren’t
- Hard to find products such as such as curved bifold doors and open corner designs
At Burgess Group, we supply Sunflex bifold doors, which we regard as one of the finest bifold systems available in the UK. German-designed and engineered, Sunflex bifolds offer visible quality not only in appearance, but in how they feel to use every day.
As well as our contemporary Sunflex doors, you can choose Aluco steel look and luxurious doors in timber or a combination of slimline aluminium outside and warm wood inside. All our bifold doors are built to last and promise years of enjoyment.
Why Burgess Group Takes a Selective Approach
We do not offer mass-market alternatives. Every product we supply has been selected because it performs beautifully and looks exceptional. We work exclusively with manufacturers who design and build their own systems, ensuring consistency, longevity and proper long-term support.
Highly insulated, secure and meticulously crafted, our bifold doors suit both period homes and contemporary architecture across East Anglia.
- Engineering integrity
- Visual refinement
- Long-term reliability
- Slim, balanced sightlines
- Technical capability where others fall short
- Specialist solutions such as curved bifolds and open corners
Why Choose Bifold Doors?
While sliding doors are popular, a bifold door offers something unique. When open, the panels fold away to give up to 95% clear opening, framing your outdoor space without visual interruption. When closed, the doors provide excellent insulation, security and comfort throughout the year.
Bifold doors work beautifully in kitchens, open-plan living areas, dining rooms, bedrooms opening onto terraces and even behind Juliet balconies. With the right brand and configuration, they combine everyday practicality with architectural presence.

Choosing the Right Material: Aluminium, Timber, Steel-Look or Hybrid
Whilst we only provide aluminium, hybrid bifolds aluminium outside and wood inside and solid timber bifolds, our experience spans every material type. Whilst even a budget bifold, properly made and fitted will serve you well, there are other considerations with bifolds and the material they come in.
uPVC Bifold Doors – Budget-Friendly but Limited
uPVC bifolds are a budget-friendly option, but they come with compromises. Thicker frames reduce glass area, panel sizes are limited and thermal expansion can cause sticking or inconsistent operation in warmer weather. While suitable for occasional-use spaces, uPVC lacks the refinement and durability most homeowners seek in a premium extension.
We choose not to offer uPVC bifold doors because they have not proven to be reliable by design.
Timber Bifold Doors – Warm, Authentic, and Refined
Timber bifolds bring warmth, character and authenticity, particularly in period homes. Modern engineered timber offers excellent stability and longevity, with high-quality finishes requiring far less maintenance than many expect.
For Suffolk longhouses, Cambridgeshire cottages and heritage homes, timber bifolds sit naturally within the architecture. When properly specified and maintained, timber remains one of the most rewarding materials available.
You may read that timber is renowned for ongoing maintenance. This is not entirely true. Only when you speak with a timber windows and doors specialist, you’ll learn how modern timber windows and doors are designed and built to last. We don’t need to convince you. We’ll explain, and you’ll understand.
Timber windows and doors today also benefit from technology in both treatments, paint quality and design. So if you love timber windows, don’t be put off by what companies that don’t sell these tell you. Speak to a specialist in timber windows. We are one such specialist with a proven track record in the area over many years. And we also have a new dedicated Timber Windows showroom in Norwich,.
Hybrid Bifold Doors – Premium Comfort, Minimal Maintenance
Hybrid systems combine aluminium externally with timber internally. Low-maintenance outside, warm and tactile inside. Our Sunflex aluminium-timber bifolds offer excellent thermal performance, durability and a refined interior finish, making them ideal for architect-designed homes and design-led extensions.
Aluminium and Wood bifolds are ideal for homeowners who value:
• A warmer, design-led interior finish
• A weather-resistant exterior with minimal upkeep
• Low U-values and impressive thermal performance
• A material palette that balances natural and contemporary styling
They are particularly suited to architect-designed projects or spaces where both performance and visual sophistication are essential.
Aluminium & Steel-Look Bifold Doors – Contemporary, Minimal, Architectural
Aluminium is widely regarded as the most capable bifold material. Strong, slim and reliable, it supports larger panels and taller openings with ease.
Our Sunflex aluminium bifold doors embody this approach. One of the UK’s most prestigious brands, a Sunflex bifold is German designed and engineered, with a quality, fit and finish, luxury and feel no other bifold can provide. Precise, elegant and engineered for long-term performance.
For homeowners drawn to an industrial or heritage aesthetic, Aluco steel-look bifolds reinterpret traditional metal glazing using aluminium. With stepped profiles, slim glazing bars and a fully matching range of windows and doors, they offer striking visual character with modern performance.
Premium advantages of aluminium and steel-look bifolds:
• Slim sightlines for a refined architectural presence
• High-strength profiles supporting large, uninterrupted panels
• Robust powder-coated finishes for lasting colour and texture
• Beautifully smooth operation with arguably the finest door hardware on the market
• Consistent thermal performance for year-round comfort
Aluminium bifolds have now been in the UK over twenty years and have proved themselves ideal for both contemporary and traditional homes. Functional, safe, secure, reliable and always making a design statement.
Benefits You Only Get from a Bifold Door
One frequently asked question is, what is best, a bifold or a sliding door? Both products have their advantages and compromises. At Burgess Group we draw from over three decades of experience working with premium glazing systems for our customer homes. And did you know, there are some benefits only a bifold door can provide:
A Full, Uninterrupted Opening
When open, a bifold door lets you enjoy virtually 90% of the opening. It creates openness that sliding doors cannot replicate, unless they are pocket doors, an altogether differently type of sliding door. Similarly French doors with side panels won’t give you the entire opening.

Matching Single and Double Doors
Bifold systems can be configured as hinged single or double doors, allowing every external door in your home to match perfectly in sightlines, hardware and proportions.
Another benefit is slimmer doors capable of wider and taller sizes than conventional patio doors.

Traffic Door Convenience
When designed with a traffic door, your doors are as functional as a single or set of French doors. A traffic door enables easy entry and exit without having to fold all the panels back. They are ideal for ventilation, taking out the laundry, letting out a pet and make your doors usable every day of the year.
Another benefit is slimmer doors capable of wider and taller sizes than conventional patio doors.

We recommend a bifold with a traffic door in terraced houses with an extension where often the patio door is the only back door out to the garden.
External Opening and Locking Options
Bifolds can be opened and locked from the outside, giving you complete flexibility if you live in the kind of house where the parking is at the back and you use your patio doors to get into your home.
Ventilation Without Opening the Door
A tilt-opening window integrated into a bifold panel offers subtle ventilation. This integrated window in a bifold panel is a great idea in compact townhouses or kitchens.
The option of moving an entire set to the left or the right.
A Sunflex sliding door can be configured with a floating mullion on each side. As a result it is unique in that you can move an entire door set to the left and to the right.
Choosing the Right Glazing
Glass is the largest component of any bifold door and plays a major role in comfort and performance.
Most premium doors come with advanced double glazing, though triple glazing is available for homes requiring superior acoustic or thermal performance. With glass being the biggest component in any door, it’s worth considering which glass type is best for you.
Premium glazing options include:
• Laminated safety glass for additional security and quietness
• Solar control coatings for south-facing elevations
• Tinted or obscured glass for privacy
• Integral blinds for privacy and shading housed between the glass.
Timber and hybrid bifolds have excellent insulation thanks to the solid nature of the wood used. Aluminium bifolds benefit from internal thermal inserts. Therefore, your new bifold doors working with the right glass specification deliver on comfort, insulation, protection of fabrics from sun damage and much more. And a correctly designed bifold door comfortably meets or exceeds Building Regulations for windows and doors, whether you’re replacing a dated door or for your new extension.
Bifolding door security and protection for your home
As bifold doors have evolved over the last two decades, so have the security features. Whilst all modern bifold doors come with good security, the difference comes in the security features themselves and the quality of the locking systems, general components and design.
As standard we provide doors with toughened safety glass and our doors are tested to the latest security requirements such as PAS 24 2022 and Secured by Design requirements.
If you are building a new home or extension, Document Q is one of the required Building Regulations that our doors meet.
